Contour fuse is the useful middle ground of kilnforming. It gives more softening and bonding than a tack fuse, but it stops before the glass becomes the smoother, more unified surface of a full fuse.

Artists often reach for contour fuse when a light tack feels too sharp or fragile, but a full fuse would erase too much detail. Edges round. Layers settle. Texture remains, but it becomes softer and more integrated.

Because contour fuse lives between two more familiar results, it rewards careful observation. A small change in heatwork can shift the piece toward tack or toward full fuse. The goal is to learn what that middle range looks like in your kiln.

01 / The middle result

Contour fuse softens the design without flattening it completely.

In a contour fuse, compatible glass pieces receive enough heatwork for edges to round and layers to bond more confidently. Raised details may relax into the surface, but they do not disappear completely. The result often feels smoother to the hand while still showing the construction of the design.

This can be ideal for panels, tiles, jewelry, components, and decorative pieces where you want visual depth but not a very sharp relief. It can also make a piece feel more finished than a light tack without sacrificing all texture.

The amount of contour can vary. Some artists prefer a gentle contour that keeps strong relief. Others want the design to settle more deeply while still avoiding full-fuse flatness. Naming that desired degree of softening helps you choose and adjust schedules.

Think of contour fuse as a controlled compromise. It is not failed tack fuse and it is not underdone full fuse. It is its own result: bonded, rounded, and still dimensional.

Edges tell you how much heatwork the piece received.

Edges are one of the best clues in a contour-fused piece. Sharp edges suggest the firing stayed closer to tack fuse. Rounded but still visible edges suggest the contour range. Edges that have flowed heavily or flattened into a smooth surface suggest the firing moved toward full fuse.

Look at small details too. Stringers, dots, frit, raised shapes, and borders each soften at different rates depending on size and contact. Some may settle more than others, especially if the piece has uneven thickness.

The surface can also reveal kiln behavior. One side may be more rounded than another if shelf position, hot spots, mold mass, or load density changed the heatwork. Those differences are not just flaws; they are information about how your kiln delivered heat.

When you record the result, describe the edge and surface separately. “Edges round enough, center still textured,” or “small details sank too far” gives you a much better next step than simply writing “contour fuse worked.”

03 / Schedule balance

Small changes can move contour toward tack or full fuse.

Contour fuse is sensitive because it occupies a narrow visual range. A slightly higher target, longer hold, slower climb, or hotter shelf position may push the result toward full fuse. A lower target or shorter hold may leave the piece closer to tack fuse.

That does not mean contour fuse is unpredictable. It means you should make focused changes and keep clear notes. If the surface is too sharp, you might add a small amount of heatwork. If details are disappearing, you might reduce the hold or target.

Always consider the whole path. A contour result can be affected by how long the kiln spends near forming temperature, not only by the final target. Kiln lag, overshoot, and load size can all change the practical heatwork the glass receives.

Testing is especially valuable here. A small sample strip with the same glass, thickness, and details can help you locate your kiln’s contour range before committing a larger piece.

Use contour fuse when you want depth without harsh relief.

Contour fuse can make raised designs feel more integrated. It is useful when a tack-fused surface feels too prickly, too fragile, or too visually separate, but full fuse would remove the lively structure of the design.

It can also be helpful for blanks that will be slumped later if you want some surface movement to remain after forming. The contour firing can bond and soften the design before the later slump changes the shape.

Not every design benefits from contour fuse. Very fine detail may soften more than you expect. Delicate stringer drawings, crisp geometric separations, and high-relief elements may need a lighter tack if preservation is the priority.

The best question is: what should survive the heat? If the answer is “the overall relief, but with softer edges,” contour fuse may be the right process.

Contour fuse is useful when you want the design to settle, not vanish.

05 / Cooling and future firings

A contour-fused piece may be only one step in the process.

Many contour-fused pieces are later slumped, coldworked, drilled, or incorporated into another project. That makes annealing and cooling important even if the first firing looks successful.

The piece may have uneven thickness because the design still has relief. Anneal for the actual mass and complexity, not only the nominal sheet thickness. Raised areas can hold and release heat differently than flatter areas.

If the contour-fused blank will be slumped later, avoid carrying hidden stress into the second firing. A good anneal after the first firing gives the next process a safer starting point.

As with every schedule, write down what the piece is meant to become next. “Contour fuse before slump” may call for a different tolerance than “finished textured tile.” The future use helps define how careful the schedule should be.

A good contour fuse protects both today’s surface and tomorrow’s firing.
