Compatibility is one of those glass words that can sound more final than it really is. A label may say 90 COE or 96 COE. A bin may be marked fusible. A color may come from a familiar brand family. But none of those clues means every piece of glass with the same number can be used interchangeably without thought.

For beginners, the safest starting point is simple: use glass that is sold as tested compatible within the same system, follow manufacturer guidance, and keep unfamiliar combinations out of important work until you have tested them. That is not meant to make glass feel frightening. It is meant to make your choices calmer.

More experienced artists may knowingly test across systems, use special effects, or make educated decisions based on firing history and stress checks. That nuance matters. But the beginner habit is still the best foundation: COE is information; tested compatibility is stronger information; your own kiln notes are the final studio record.

COE is a clue, not a guarantee.

COE stands for coefficient of expansion. In studio language, it describes how much a glass expands as it heats and contracts as it cools. That movement matters because fused glass is heated, softened, joined, annealed, and cooled as one object. If different pieces want to expand and contract at meaningfully different rates, stress can be trapped inside the finished work.

The tempting shortcut is to treat the COE number as the whole compatibility story. If two glasses both say 96, or both say 90, it feels reasonable to assume they should fuse together safely. But compatibility is more than one number. Glass chemistry, viscosity, colorants, manufacturing controls, annealing behavior, and how the glass moves through the firing can all matter.

That is why “same COE” and “tested compatible” should not be treated as identical phrases. Same COE tells you something useful. Tested compatible tells you the manufacturer has designed and checked that glass to work within a defined product family or system.

For beginners, the practical answer is not to memorize chemistry. It is to choose a tested compatible glass family and stay inside it while you learn. That gives your early firings fewer unknowns and makes troubleshooting much easier.

A compatible system is a studio agreement, not a universal passport.

When a manufacturer describes glass as tested compatible, they are usually saying the glass has been produced and checked to work with other glass in that manufacturer’s compatible line under appropriate kilnforming conditions. That is why artists often talk about glass systems or families, not only numbers.

Bullseye, Oceanside/System 96, and Wissmach COE 96 are useful examples of brand or system language, not rankings. Each has its own product information, firing guidance, and compatibility expectations. The important beginner lesson is that the label belongs to a context. A “96” from one source is not automatically interchangeable with every other “96” from every other source.

That can feel fussy at first, but it is actually protective. If you keep your first projects inside one tested system, you can pay attention to design, firing schedule, thickness, bubbles, and annealing without also wondering whether a hidden compatibility problem is waiting underneath the surface.

Compatibility problems are frustrating because they do not always announce themselves clearly when the kiln opens. A piece can look smooth, glossy, and successful while carrying internal stress. That stress may show up later as a crack, a clean break, a failure during coldworking, or trouble in a second firing.

The risk comes from glass pieces trying to move differently as they cool. Annealing helps compatible glass relieve stress, but annealing cannot fully solve a serious mismatch between glasses that do not want to travel together. A careful schedule is important, but it is not a magic repair for incompatible materials.

This is one reason compatibility belongs near the beginning of the studio decision, not only at the troubleshooting stage. Before you choose a full fuse, tack fuse, slump, or fire polish, ask what glass system the piece is using. If you cannot answer that clearly, the project may deserve a smaller test before it deserves a large sheet, a special color, or sentimental design time.

The safest habit is to reduce mystery. Label glass when it comes into the studio. Keep offcuts separated by system. Do not let unlabeled scraps drift into beginner fusing projects just because they look similar.

A compatible-looking surface does not prove the stress inside the glass is safe.

05 / Stained glass and fusible glass

Treat stained glass gently unless it is sold for fusing.

Stained glass deserves a careful, respectful note because many glass artists begin there. Stained glass is beautiful, expressive, and highly usable in leaded, foiled, mosaic, and decorative work. But glass made for stained glass is not automatically made for kilnforming compatibility.

Some stained glass products may be sold as fusible or tested compatible. Others may be intended primarily for cold assembly, windows, panels, lamps, mosaics, or decorative use. The fact that a sheet is gorgeous, cuts well, and looks similar in thickness does not mean it should be fused with tested compatible kiln glass.

If a piece of stained glass is unlabeled, inherited, from a mixed scrap bin, or not clearly documented as fusible within a compatible system, beginners should keep it out of fused work that matters. Use it where it belongs beautifully: stained glass, mosaic, samples, or experiments clearly marked as experiments.

This is not a warning against stained glass. It is a boundary between processes. The kiln asks glass to become one object through heat. Cold assembly asks separate pieces to live together through structure, solder, adhesive, grout, or framing. Those are different kinds of compatibility.

Stained glass can be perfect glass for the right process. “Beautiful” and “fusible together” are different questions.

06 / A simple test-tile habit

Test small when the combination is unfamiliar.

A test tile does not have to become a laboratory procedure. For a beginner studio, the idea is simple: before using an unfamiliar combination in an important piece, make a small sample with the same glass relationship you plan to use. Keep it modest, label it clearly, fire it with an appropriate schedule, and record what happened.

The test should answer a practical question, not every possible question. Did these two colors behave normally together? Did the unknown accent create cracking, strange separation, or visible stress concerns? Did a special sheet, frit, stringer, or scrap produce a result worth investigating further?

A test tile is especially useful when the project is large, sentimental, thick, expensive, intended for sale, or likely to be coldworked, drilled, slumped, shipped, or handled often. The more the finished piece matters, the more a small test earns its shelf space.

The key is to label the test. Write the glass source, system if known, colors, thickness, schedule family, date, and result. A mystery test tile is not much better than a mystery scrap bin. A labeled test tile becomes part of your studio memory.

Stress checks are helpful evidence. They are not permission to ignore compatibility at the start.

Keep the first learning path clean.

The beginner-friendly rule is conservative on purpose: choose one tested compatible glass system, keep it labeled, use manufacturer guidance, and test before mixing across systems or adding unknown glass. This keeps your early firings understandable.

When something goes wrong in a clean system, you can troubleshoot with more confidence. Bubbles may point to construction or bubble squeeze. Over-rounding may point to heatwork. Cracks may point to heat-up, annealing, cooling, thickness, or handling. But if the glass itself is unknown, every result has an extra question attached.

As your experience grows, you may decide to explore beyond the beginner rule. That is part of being an artist. Just make the shift consciously. Write down what you are testing, keep the sample small, and separate experiments from reliable studio stock.

Compatible glass is not meant to limit creativity. It gives creativity a stable base. The calmer your material choices are, the more attention you can give to color, design, texture, schedule, and the actual piece you came to the kiln to make.
